Aquarium keeping isn't about keeping aquariums or fish or coral at all - it's about keeping water chemistry. Experience shows us that clean aquariums have better parameters.
The single most direct contributor to a healthy tank and livestock is the judicious application of maintenance.
Water changes are the magic wand that you wave to make everything better. VTC recommends weekly 10% water changes for established tanks and weekly 20% water changes for new or recovering tanks. For tanks that require an intervention, we default to the 40 / 60 / 60 method, a solution that provides for an overall 90% water change by removing first 40% of the water, and then performing to 60% water changes of the remaining water, followed by a top off to 100%.
It is a fortunate result that a water change is the simplest and quickest solution to correct water chemistry.
In addition to water changes, it's important to clean filter media (filter socks, roller mat, filter floss, and skim mate), ensure that top off water is sufficient to keep the salinity stable, and that salt creep and fish waste are removed to keep the system running at peak.
For systems running Carbon, Granulated Ferric Oxide (GFO), Bio Pellets, or other reactor media, we inspect and replace as needed to keep these operating most efficiently.
Aquariums with automated chemistry measurements and additives are monitored for catalyst volume, waste disposal, and probe cleanliness.
Advanced systems that include carbon reactors, kalkwasser reactors, algae reactors, or calcium reactors receive a thorough inspection and adjustments as needed.
Pumps and wave makers should be inspected and thoroughly cleaned once every three months, or more often as conditions warrant. Snails are notorious for crawling into the plumbing and lodging an impeller or blocking a pipe. These types of failures can be catastrophic to the system as well as the inhabitants, and for this reason we never skip!
No service is complete without a buff and polish - including cleaning the sandbed, blowing off rocks and corals, cleaning the glass inside and out, wiping down the tank stand and hood, as well as wiping down lights, cords, and equipment.
